Read Chapters 4 and 5 in A Short Guide to Writing about Film by Timothy Corrigan, and Carl Freedman’s essay “The End of Work: From Double Indemnity toBody Heat,” pp. 61-74, and Greg Tuck’s essay “Laughter in the Dark: Irony, Black Comedy and Noir in the Films of David Lynch, the Coen Brothers and Quentin Tarantino,” pp. 152-167, in Neo-Noir, edited by Mark Bould, Kathrina Glitre and Greg Tuck. Then watch Billy Wilder’s film Double Indemnity (1944) and Lawrence Kasdan’s Body Heat (1981), and write a 3-4 page Critical Essay (CE-2) on the ways in which Kasdan’s neo-noir film Body Heat both does and does not follow the narrative and stylistic patterns of Billy Wilder’s film noir classic Double Indemnity, specifically, in terms of how each film uses thematic and stylistic devices to convey its film noir and neo-noir themes.
